This is so well articulated. I had a similar experience this weekend when my nan asked me how to use the alarm clock on her phone. Truly, giving people more information can be so simple to us and yet so helpful to them- such a missed opportunity when we don't give that extra helping hand, yet it is so easy to overlook it thinking they already know.
I teach English as a second language (ESL) and, more lately, English lit. I've started including vocabulary lists for my lit students the same as I would for my ESL students, and I've gotten a lot of appreciative comments. Quietly providing such a list helps out my francophone and hispanophone students studying in English, and guides ANY student intimidated by language. Wish I thought of this two years ago when I started teaching lit!!!
